Viva Pat Stith!

Pat Stith -- legendary investigative reporter, son of the South and my friend – is retiring from The News & Observer in Raleigh North, Carolina.

Read more about him here. Pat is known for his dogged investigative reporting; he has a Pulitzer to show for it. But, as this story notes, he is also insanely devoted to accuracy. The “pencil check" has saved me many times. I teach it to my students.

Stith's work sprang a man from prison and put five others behind bars. His revelations prompted rewrites of the state's workers' compensation laws, pointed out the environmental dangers caused by the pork industry and, most recently, revealed more than $400 million wasted by the state's mental health reforms.
