Tips for wanna-be writers

I'm on deadline for a rush-job assignment but wanted to note this op-ed piece in the Globe today.

A novelist comments on people constantly telling her they could write a great book if they had time.

I encourage everyone to write. But I find it puzzling when people view writing as something effortless that comes naturally.

She's much more gentle about it than I might be. (For the record, one of my favorite writers is a physicist.)

...A physicist declares, "I've got a great idea for a mystery-thriller-philosophical-love story - if I only had the time." I nod, resisting the temptation to reply: "And I have a great idea for a unified field theory - if I just had a moment to work it out on paper..."
